If you’ve got a child who loves chopping, stirring, or simply licking the spoon, you’ll want to get your hands on Chew, the brand new magazine from the brilliant minds behind Anorak and DOT.
Created by the ever-imaginative team at Studio Anorak, Chew is their latest printed venture, this time focusing on something we all think about daily: food. But rather than aiming for fancy techniques or endless recipes, this one’s about celebrating the everyday to help kids understand the importance of fruits, veg, grains and more. With beautifully illustrated pages, fun facts and hands-on activities that are as educational as they are tasty.
We were lucky enough to receive the latest issue (Vol.2) here at Creative Parent HQ, and let’s just say it’s gone down a treat with our 9 and 5 yr old. This issue is all about bread, the humble, universal staple seen and eaten in homes everywhere. It covers everything from the history of how it came to be, to breads from around the world, and even profiles of bread heroes across different cultures.

Like all of Studio Anorak’s creations, Chew is joyfully illustrated, printed on recycled paper and uses vegetable inks, a lovely reminder that good design and sustainability can go hand in hand.
It’s packed with interactive elements too. Kids can colour in loaves, design their dream sandwich, and even email in their own creations. There’s a clever mix of maths and literacy activities woven through the pages, from counting seeds to spotting patterns in bread crusts. Encouraging a playful, hands-on approach to learning.
The recipes are simple and age appropriate, with clear instructions that even kitchen newbies can follow. And while it’s aimed at children, don’t be surprised if you find yourself quietly enjoying the read too (I know we did!).

“I liked it because it’s kid friendly. There are lots of little characters, I especially like the worm guy. It inspired me to bake and make mini sandwiches from reading the comic in the magazine” — Mila (Age 9)
Studio Anorak was founded by Cathy Olmedillas back in 2006, with the aim of creating thoughtful, design-led publications that speak directly to children, not down to them. Their mission is to inspire creativity, spark curiosity and encourage kids to engage with the world in imaginative ways.
With Chew, they’re doing just that, using food as a springboard for learning, creativity and conversation. It’s the kind of resource we wish we had growing up, and we’re thrilled it now exists for our own kids.

Our eldest was completely hooked. Over the past year she has developed a love for cooking and baking so Chew came at the ideal time. She ended up creating a lunch for us all, complete with mini cocktail sandwiches all inspired by reading the magazine. Chef’s kiss.
Whether your little one is a future Bake Off champ or just curious about what goes into their lunchbox, Chew is a warm, fun and beautifully made introduction to the world of food. We’re already hungry for the next issue.
